Troop 3034 Girl Scouts USA    2008-2009

Newton, Massachusetts

Welcome!

We meet at Lasell College, 1844 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton, MA, Wolfe Hall. [Click here for a map.] Meetings are from 3-5 pm, approximately every other Sunday during the school year. For outside events, we will meet at the location of the event.

Activities

Fun is the troop's first objective. Our meetings often include field trips of community service, such as filming a Public Service Announcement at NewTV or cooking food for a local food pantry. We provide structured activities to allow the girls to earn Cadette Interest Project Patches. We also participate in physical activities such as hiking and swimming. As much as possible, we try to let our girls decide which activities we will do. See our calendar.

Our meetings begin with a fun activity led by one of the girls, followed by a small snack and possibly another activity. All girls share in the responsibilities, or "kapers." For example, one girl will take attendance, another will begin the meeting, another will lead the group in a fun activity, and yet another will bring the snack. We rotate the kapers so everyone has a turn.

Parent involvement

We encourage parents to be active in our troop. You do not need to have been a scout as a child. Parents can supervise activities in regular meetings, drive to outside events, or obtain materials. You may serve as a cookie organizer, be a troop leader, or keep our records up to date.

Joining the troop and estimating costs

Our troop has 12 girls, ranging in age from 11 to 14, in grades 6-8. We are currently a Cadette level troop. Joining is easy. All you need to do is fill out the following:

A uniform costs about $20-$30 and is not covered by dues. By uniform we mean either a vest or a sash with troop numerals and council patches. Many girls find it fun to sew patches they have earned onto the vest or sash, but this is a personal choice. Uniforms are optional for Cadette Girl Scouts. Patches earned through the year are covered by the annual troop dues. Each girl should have her own copy of the Girl Scout Interest Project Book, available for purchase at the Girl Scout store at Cedar Hill in Waltham, MA. No girl should be discouraged from joining our troop because of financial need. Parents, please contact one of the troop leaders in confidence.
